Help when you need it

College life can sometimes seem daunting, but don't worry! We have a team of people who work alongside your subject teachers to make sure you get help when you need it. Students at AV6 are all treated as individuals and staff work hard to ensure your education and support is tailored to you.

Tutorial Programme

AV6 offers an outstanding tutorial support programme for all of its students. Students are assigned a personal tutor who they will see every morning. In that time students will learn about current affairs, personal and health issues, and plans for university and employment. They will also set personal academic targets for improvement and review these with their tutor 1:1. Knowing the tutor well is invaluable when applying to university or for employment as they will be able to write a detailed and effective reference of support.

At AV6, a real strength of our Sixth Form is our understanding of the support students need to make the transition from pupil to student. A day of induction after GCSE examinations and a series of 1:1 mentoring sessions, ensure that every student creates a study programme that perfectly matches their attributes and ambitions.

Skills Development

In the Sixth Form you learn how to be a more independent learner, how learning is just directed by your teachers and doesn’t stop at the classroom door! Indeed, all our new Year 12s undertake a study skills programme, in association with Bath Spa University, in term 1 to help them make that transition from GCSE. We offer advice and support for students who might require additional help with their studies. This may include help with study skills such as time management, organisation skills, exam revision technique, coursework support or literacy.

Careers Advice and Guidance

You will be able to plan your next step beyond College life using the information provided on the careers programme.  We work closely with students and tutors to provide a comprehensive service. Advice and guidance are provided on your progression to employment, higher or further education or work-based training including apprenticeships. Specialist help is available to you when you complete your UCAS form, write your CV and practise your interview technique. Appointments are available for all students with our careers advisor.

Additional Education Support

We welcome students who have a disability, specific learning difficulty or medical condition and actively encourage early disclosure of needs so that we can talk to you about your support requirements. To ensure that the best possible support can be provided, it's important that students with recognised needs are assessed prior to entry to the College. Any written evidence of a learning difficulty should be included with the application so that we can plan for particular needs or apply for examination concessions, if applicable.

"The experience here has been amazing, I am grateful for all the help and guidance, and I am very excited about my future."

“Being a Sixth Form tutor is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job. From simple joys of an early morning Guardian quiz to supporting a student’s mammoth effort and subsequent excitement of a successful UCAS application, the tutorial system is what sets AV6 apart as a Sixth Form. A AV6 tutor group is a happy, supportive yet challenging forum and one I relish being a part.”

“Being a Sixth Form tutor is all about supporting students over these two transformational years. Whether it’s supporting the transition from GCSE, getting involved in the student-led fun charity events or providing support on application forms for the next stage, being part of this process is a unique privilege.”
