Sport BTEC Level 3

This course specialises in coaching, sports development and fitness. It is suitable for students who are aiming to go on to university and study a sports related degree; those looking to get into PE teaching, to gain employment within the Leisure and Recreation Industry including Leisure Centre Management, Sports Coaching, Fitness Instructor, Physiotherapy, Sports Science and Sports Retail; or those looking to enter the Uniformed Services.

The course gives students the skills, knowledge and confidence to work within this sector of the sport industry. Students are also encouraged to take additional sports qualifications such as Community Sport Leader Award and Sport Governing Body courses. Other qualifications include First Aid for Sports Coaches, Safeguarding qualifications, Lifeguarding, Personal Training and a variety of opportunities to lead or coach in the community with a range of age groups, through being a part of the leadership academy.

The BTEC Level 3 in Sport is available in 2 different forms:

  1. BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma (A Level Equivalent)
  2. BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (3 x A Level Equivalent)

The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport has five units:

  • Principles of Anatomy
  • Physiology of Fitness
  • Fitness training and programming
  • Fitness Testing
  • Nutrition

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport has fifteen units:

  1. Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport
  2. Fitness training and programming
  3. Professional development in the Sports Industry
  4. Application of Fitness Testing
  5. Sports Psychology
  6. Technical and Tactical Skills in Sport
  7. The Athlete’s Lifestyle
  8. Sports Injuries
  9. Analysis of Sports Performance
  10. Sport and Exercise Massage
  11. Practical Team Sports
  12. Development and Provision of Sport and Physical Activity
  13. Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport
  14. Organising Sports Events
  15. Sport as a Business


BTEC Sport has an excellent achievement record at AV6 with a substantial number of students progressing onto university. The most popular undergraduate courses are in the areas of Sports Science, Leisure Management, PE Teaching and Physiotherapy but students have also used their qualification to gain entry onto Journalism and Psychology degrees.
