AVC: big on badminton!

The Avon Valley College KS3 badminton team took part in the Wiltshire county final of the Center Parcs National Schools Badminton Championships at Tidworth Leisure Centre recently.

AVC’s team included; Year 7 Archie Sheppard and Year 9s - Charlie Sheppard, Charlie Stevens-White and Matthew Young, who competed agsainst Bishop’s Wordsworth Grammar School, Devizes School, St Laurence School and Royal Wootton Bassett Academy.

The students were playing for a place in the regional finals held at Exeter University in March.

“The boys have all trained hard both at school and at Stonehenge Badminton Club where three of them are members,” said PE Teacher, Collette Harries. “They played some good games and did themselves proud; this is the first time we have got through to the county final.”

After some tough games the AVC team came third.

“The best part of the day was playing Bishop’s Wordsworth again,” said Matthew. “We were keen to get our revenge from the Level 2 competition, unfortunately we didn’t manage this but we played our best.”

There was also a special visitor to the event. England Badminton player Nicola Cerfontyne came to present the medals, she also played against the students and signed players’ badminton bags.

And that’s not all that’s been happening on the AVC badminton courts...

AVC recently hosted the Badminton In Schools Initiative (BISI) festival. Four local schools took part; Larkhill Primary School, Woodborough Church of England Primary School, St Michael’s Church of England Primary School and Durrington Church of England Junior School.

The event was led by AVC’s Student Sports Leaders, who gave up their own time to volunteer.

“They did a great job keeping everyone organised and motivated throughout the festival,” said PE Teacher, Collette Harries.

The primary school pupils were split into mixed teams of four and were allowed to choose their team name. Each team completed four stations focusing on the different skills used in badminton. The children collected points at each station which were added together for the final results.

The AVC Sports Leaders who took part were: Dillon, Timothy, Charlie, Louie, Ben, Matthew, Cory, James, Morgan, Elizabeth, Erin, Heidi, Jess and Sophie.
